"SO, WHEN CAN I READ SOME OF YOUR NOVEL?"
It's not published yet, but I thought I'd put up some pages for those who'd like to take a look. Who knows, maybe a serial's in order? Get hooked here.

TEACHING FALL 2011
Classes are underway at UC Berkeley Extension. In July 2011, Laurie Ann Doyle and I led workshops for Extension's new Fiction Writing Intensive -- a weeklong program of morning workshops, afternoon lectures, and evening readings. Next summer's Intensive will take place the week of July 9. Meanwhile, I'm teaching Writing Skills Workshop in fall 2011 and Craft of Writing in spring 2012, both at Extension.
LOOKING ANEW AT CLASSICS
Last May, I had the pleasure of talking with members of S.F.'s favorite ladies' club about Madame Bovary, the latest in a Fallen Women series. (We read Anna Karenina in 2010 and will explore Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter in spring 2011.) I began visiting the club with Gogol's "Overcoat" and have enjoyed exploring all these classics with the ladies.

"Which Leaves Me," awarded 2nd place in Glimmer Train's Very Short Fiction Award, appears in the summer 2009 issue of Glimmer Train. I wrote the story in October 2005 at VCCA, a residency for artists and writers in the foothills of the Blue Ridge.

ESSAY IN NEW ANTHOLOGY
The essay "The Water Will Hold You," originally published in Image magazine and included in Best American Spiritual Writing 2004, appears in Religion in the 21st Century by Jonathan S. Cullick alongside pieces by Karen Armstrong and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, among others.
TRUTH IS STRANGER
"The Art of Fiction" appears in spring/fall 2007 issue of Bellingham Review. I wrote this story while on residency at Ragdale in January 2005. I'd brought something else, but was stuck. After a few days of writers' block, I decided to have a little fun with writing rules. I read from it at San Francisco's Litquake festival a couple years ago, where it drew cheers, laughter, and a few shocked expressions from one young boy (Can she say that?!?). Watch for yourself.

My article about visiting San Quentin and meeting the men of Katargeo, the prison's program for lifers, appeared in the February 17, 2008, edition of the San Francisco Chronicle Magazine.
