NEW ONLINE CLASSES
Image, the wonderful journal of art, faith, & mystery, is now offering an exciting opportunity.  Glen Online offers courses designed for students to set reasonable creative writing goals with a mentor's guidance, all while working at their own pace.  I'll be teaching Introduction to Creative Nonfiction, and courses in fiction, magical realism, and poetry are also offered, as well as tutorials. Check it out.

"SO, WHEN CAN I READ SOME OF YOUR NOVEL?"
People have asked for years (and, yes, it's been years).  It's not published yet, but I thought I'd put up some pages for those who'd like to take a look.  Who knows, maybe a serial's in order?  Get hooked here.

LOOKING ANEW AT A CLASSIC
At the invitation of Lauren John, librarian at S.F.'s favorite women's club, I recently led a discussion on Gogol's story "The Overcoat." Preparing for the talk allowed me to revisit - and find new layers of meaning and inspiration in - the Russian story written in 1842 and TC Boyle's 1981 Soviet update. Lauren gives her review on the talk on red room.  In May, I'll lead the discussion on another Russian classic, Anna Karenina.

STORY PUBLISHED

"Which Leaves Me," awarded 2nd place in Glimmer Train's Very Short Fiction Award, appears in the summer 2009 issue of Glimmer Train.  I wrote the story in October 2005 at VCCA, a residency for artists and writers in the foothills of the Blue Ridge.

ESSAY IN NEW ANTHOLOGY

The essay "The Water Will Hold You," originally published in Image magazine and included in Best American Spiritual Writing 2004, appears in Religion in the 21st Century by Jonathan S. Cullick alongside pieces by Karen Armstrong and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, among others.

TRUTH IS STRANGER
"
The Art of Fiction" appears in spring/fall 2007 issue of Bellingham Review. I wrote this story while on residency at Ragdale in January 2005.  I'd brought something else, but was stuck.  After a few days of writers' block, I decided to have a little fun with writing rules. I read from it at San Francisco's  Litquake festival a couple years ago, where it drew cheers, laughter, and a few shocked expressions from one young boy (Can she say that?!?). Watch for yourself.

GETTING INSIDE
My article about visiting San Quentin and meeting the men of Katargeo, the prison's program for lifers, appeared in the February 17, 2008, edition of the San Francisco Chronicle Magazine.

FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT

I appeared on LightWorks (KRON-TV; channel 4 in San Francisco) on December 2, 2007  I was also interviewed on KGO-TV's View from the Bay on May 30, 2007.
